Bautzen Reservoir (Talsperre Bautzen)

Talsperre Bautzen is a reservoir on the Spree river northeast of Bautzen, built primarily for drinking water supply and flood control for the wider Upper Lusatia region, with a designated recreational zone on its southern shore that has operated as a Strandbad since the mid-20th century. Because much of the reservoir serves drinking-water functions, swimming is limited to the marked Strandbad area rather than the entire shoreline, but that zone includes a sand-and-grass beach, changing rooms, showers, a lakeside restaurant, and an adjoining campground popular with both German and Sorbian families from the surrounding Bautzen district, home to Saxony's Sorbian (Wendish) minority. A sailing club operates from the same shore, and rowing boats can be hired for a paddle beyond the swimming zone. Water temperatures are somewhat cooler than the Leipzig Neuseenland lakes, typically 18-22°C in summer, reflecting the reservoir's greater average depth. Reaching the Talsperre from Bautzen's train station, itself connected to Dresden by regional and express trains in under an hour, requires a short regional bus ride to the Salzenforst area on the reservoir's southern shore.
