Saxony-Anhalt sits at the historical heart of Germany, stretching along the Elbe and Saale rivers between the Harz mountains in the west and the Fläming heathland in the east. Its capital, Magdeburg, anchors the north, while Halle (Saale), the state's largest city, dominates the south. The state holds five UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the medieval half-timbered old town of Quedlinburg, the Luther Memorials in Wittenberg and Eisleben where the Protestant Reformation began, Naumburg Cathedral with its celebrated 13th-century sculpture, the Bauhaus buildings in Dessau, and the landscaped Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz.

Saxony-Anhalt has a temperate continental climate in its lowland cities. Winters (December-February) in Magdeburg and Halle are cold, with average highs of 3-5°C and lows dropping to around -1 to -2°C; snow is possible but generally moderate. Summers (June-August) are warm, with average highs of 21-23°C and occasional afternoon thunderstorms. The Harz mountains are a distinct microclimate: the Brocken summit (1,141m) is Germany's windiest point, averaging around 42 km/h wind speed year-round with gusts that have reached 263 km/h, and it holds a subarctic-leaning climate with heavy snowfall (record snow depth of 380 cm), frequent fog, and abundant precipitation (around 1,800mm annually, several times the lowland total). Visitors heading to the Brocken should expect conditions that can shift from clear to whiteout within minutes, in any season.
