Huy Ridge Forest Trail, near Halberstadt

The Huy is a long, narrow limestone ridge rising from the Harz foreland near Halberstadt, and its beech forest is one of the quieter hiking areas in the Saxony-Anhalt Harz region, drawing far fewer visitors than the busier trails around Thale or Schierke. The trail starts at Huysburg, a Benedictine monastery founded in the 11th century that still functions as a religious community and retreat, and follows ridge and forest paths for about 9 km with 160 m of elevation gain, rated Easy. The limestone soil supports a notably rich understorey, including several native orchid species that flower in May, alongside typical beech-forest wildflowers earlier in spring. Occasional clearings along the ridge open onto views across the agricultural foreland toward Halberstadt and, on clear days, the higher Harz peaks to the south. The monastery itself has a guesthouse and small shop selling produce from its grounds, making it a pleasant stop before or after the walk. Because the area lacks the dramatic gorges or summit views of the main Harz, it appeals most to hikers seeking an unhurried, low-crowd forest walk.
