St. Stephan's Church (Chagall Windows)

St. Stephan's Church stands on a hilltop in Mainz's old town, its Gothic structure dating primarily from the 13th and 14th centuries, but the building is best known today for nine deep-blue stained glass windows created by the Russian-French artist Marc Chagall between 1978 and 1985, his only stained-glass work in Germany and among his final major projects before his death in 1985. Chagall, who was Jewish and had lost family members in the Holocaust, undertook the commission at the invitation of the church's parish priest, Klaus Mayer, as a deliberate gesture of reconciliation between the Jewish and Christian communities in postwar Germany, and the windows draw on shared biblical imagery from the Hebrew Bible and New Testament rendered in Chagall's characteristic blue-toned, dreamlike style. The windows were completed in phases and installed progressively through the choir and transept over roughly seven years, with additional windows in the nave completed after Chagall's death by his workshop collaborators based on his designs, following his original color and compositional scheme. The Gothic church structure itself preserves medieval vaulting and stonework largely restored after wartime damage in the 1940s, providing the architectural setting into which the modern windows were integrated rather than replacing an intact medieval glazing scheme, much of which had already been lost. The presentation is straightforward: visitors move through the nave and choir to view the windows in natural light, with the changing daylight altering the blue tones throughout the day, and small information panels explain the commission's origin and Chagall's biography and reconciliation intent.
