Saar-Hunsrück-Steig - Erbeskopf Section (Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park)

The Erbeskopf section of the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig is best approached by car to the car park beside the Erbeskopf visitor centre near Thalfang, since bus service from Thalfang and Morbach is limited and infrequent; no permit is required to enter the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park. The full national park stages (9 to 12) run around 40 kilometres between Nonnweiler and Idar-Oberstein over two days, but the Erbeskopf summit loop itself is a shorter few-hour circuit that climbs to the 816-metre summit, the highest point in Rhineland-Palatinate. Underfoot the path is mostly firm forest track and gravel, with a boardwalk section crossing the open moorland near the summit to protect the fragile vegetation; there is little technical difficulty, though the exposed summit plateau is noticeably cooler and windier than the surrounding beech forest, and conditions can turn quickly in poor weather. Along the way the route passes a reconstructed Celtic ring wall dating to the Iron Age, one of several archaeological features preserved within the park, before opening onto heath and moorland near the top; the summit itself, with its observation tower, is the natural turn-around point for the shorter loop. There are no refuge huts on the trail itself, but the Erbeskopf visitor centre at the trailhead has toilets, information panels, and a cafe, and functions as the only reliable water source directly on this route; hikers continuing onward toward Idar-Oberstein should carry sufficient water and layers for the more remote and weather-exposed ridge sections beyond the summit.
