Deutsches Eck and Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, Koblenz

Deutsches Eck marks the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers in Koblenz, about 90 km and 40-60 minutes from Mainz by Regionalexpress or Intercity train (EUR 15-24 one way). From Koblenz Hbf it is roughly a 20-minute walk along the Rhine promenade to the monument, a broad stone spit crowned by a monumental equestrian statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I. From Deutsches Eck, the Koblenz Rheinseilbahn cable car crosses the Rhine in about six minutes to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, one of Europe's largest preserved fortifications, perched on a plateau above the river with sweeping views over both valleys and the Koblenz old town. A one-day itinerary can start at Deutsches Eck in the morning, taking in the monument and the Basilica of St. Castor nearby, then riding the cable car across to Ehrenbreitstein for the fortress grounds, the regional museum and the German Corner exhibition, before returning by cable car in the afternoon for a walk through Koblenz's old town lanes. The fortress terraces and picnic lawns make a natural rest stop, and the old town around Jesuitenplatz and the Munzplatz has bakeries, Currywurst stands and traditional Rhineland taverns for lunch or a coffee break. The best season for this trip runs April through October, when the cable car and the fortress's outdoor terraces and beer garden are in full operation and views over the confluence are clearest; arriving in the morning avoids the midday queue for the cable car in peak summer weeks. Visitors combining Koblenz with the Rhine Gorge villages further upriver often use this stop as a starting point before continuing by regional train to Boppard or St. Goar.
