North Rhine Westphalia Weather & Climate Guide 2025
Plan your trip with detailed weather information and seasonal tips for North Rhine Westphalia.
North Rhine-Westphalia (Nordrhein-Westfalen) is Germany's most populous state, home to vibrant cities like Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Dortmund. The region blends industrial heritage with world-class museums, Gothic cathedrals, baroque palaces, and sweeping natural landscapes from the Eifel hills to the Sauerland highlands.
Best Time to Visit
Best Months
May, June, September, October
Warm, pleasant temperatures (15–22°C) ideal for outdoor exploration, Rhine cycling, and visiting open-air attractions. Shoulder season crowds at major sites. Gardens and palaces at their most beautiful.
Months to Avoid
January–February
Cold, grey, and damp — outdoor attractions less enjoyable. January is the quietest month in most cities. Exception: Cologne Carnival in February/March is a must if you enjoy the festival.
Climate Overview
North Rhine-Westphalia has a temperate maritime climate with mild, often wet winters and warm summers. Rainfall is distributed fairly evenly throughout the year, with slightly drier summers and wetter autumns. The Sauerland and Eifel uplands receive significantly more rain and some snow in winter compared to the Rhine plain. Summers are warm (20–28°C) and sometimes hot, while winters are cold but rarely severe (average 2–5°C).

Seasonal Breakdown
Detailed information for each season.
🌸 Spring
Mar–May
Spring arrives gradually with March often still chilly and April increasingly mild. May is the best spring month with temperatures 15–20°C, long days, blooming palace gardens (Augustusburg, Benrath), and vibrant city life returning to Rhine terraces.
☀️ Summer
Jun–Aug
Warm to hot summers with temperatures 22–30°C and long daylight hours (sunset past 9 PM in June/July). Peak tourist season at Cologne Cathedral and major attractions. Rhine cruise season in full swing. Outdoor festivals, beer gardens, and Rhine beach bars open throughout.
🍂 Fall
Sep–Nov
September and October are arguably the best months — warm days (15–21°C), spectacular foliage in the Teutoburg Forest, Eifel, and Sauerland, and significantly fewer tourists than summer. November turns grey and cold with increasing rain.
❄️ Winter
Dec–Feb
Cold winters with temperatures typically 0–7°C. Snow possible but rarely heavy in cities; more common in Sauerland (ski resorts at Winterberg) and Eifel uplands. December is magical for Christmas markets — Cologne's, Düsseldorf's, and Münster's are among Germany's finest.
