Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is Germany's northeastern coastal state, stretching along the Baltic Sea from the port city of Rostock to the Polish border. Its official capital is the small lake-island city of Schwerin, home to the fairy-tale Schwerin Castle, while Rostock remains the largest city and gateway to the beach district of Warnemünde. The state holds two UNESCO World Heritage Old Towns, the brick-Gothic merchant cities of Stralsund and Wismar, alongside the chalk cliffs of Rügen island's Jasmund National Park and the historic Kaiserbäder imperial spa resorts of Usedom island. Inland, Müritz National Park anchors the so-called Land of a Thousand Lakes, the largest connected lake district in Germany.

Wellness travel tips

Get the most from your wellness experience.

Tip

Baltic coast resort spas in Heiligendamm, Usedom, and Rügen get busiest in July and August; book treatments at least a few days ahead in peak season

Tip

Many hotel spas open day-spa access to non-guests on weekdays; call ahead to confirm availability and bring swimwear

Tip

Winter (November-March) is a quieter, often discounted season for coastal spa breaks in Heringsdorf and Binz, with wellness the main draw rather than beach weather

Tip

Bring a bathrobe or rent one on site; most German spas require it in shared sauna and relaxation areas

Tip

Combine a spa afternoon with a walk along the Kaiserbäder piers or the Alter Strom promenade for the full Baltic coast wellness experience
