Warnemünde Strand

Warnemünde Strand is a broad, fine white-sand beach on the Baltic coast at the mouth of the Warnow river in Rostock's seaside district. The sand runs open and gently sloping for roughly two kilometres, with clear, cool Baltic water that stays shallow for a good distance from shore, making it comfortable for wading and swimming rather than serious surf. The beach faces north and can pick up a stiff onshore breeze, especially in the beach-sport blocks near the centre where volleyball, handball, and badminton courts are set out on the sand. Numbered beach blocks (1-24) are patrolled by DRK lifeguards from mid-May to mid-September, and rows of wicker Strandkorbs can be rented by the day for shelter from wind and sun. Showers and barrier-free toilet facilities are spaced along the beach at regular intervals, and a dog beach and a separate FKK (nudist) section sit at the quieter ends away from the main promenade. The family-oriented stretch closest to the Alter Strom canal and lighthouse draws the busiest crowds in summer, while the sections further along toward Diedrichshagen are calmer. Along the beachfront promenade, cafes, restaurants, and Fischbrötchen kiosks serve fresh herring and other Baltic fish sandwiches. Access is easy: the beach sits a five-minute walk from Warnemünde S-Bahn station along Kirchenstraße, and the wide paved promenade allows step-free approach from the town centre and the ferry terminal used by Scandinavian and Baltic ferry services docking at Warnemünde.
