Nationalpark-Zentrum Königsstuhl (Jasmund National Park)

The Königsstuhl visitor center sits above the chalk cliff of the same name on Rügen's northeast coast, a formation made famous by Caspar David Friedrich's Romantic-era paintings. Interactive exhibits inside cover the Baltic beech forest ecosystem and the geology behind the island's white chalk coastline, while outside a cantilevered Skywalk platform extends over the cliff edge for a direct view down to the Baltic Sea. Because private cars are restricted near the cliff, most visitors arrive by the Nationalpark-Jasmund shuttle bus from Sassnitz or Lohme, which drops passengers a short walk from the center. A visit including the cliff-path walk generally takes 2-3 hours, and weekday mornings outside the summer holidays are the best way to avoid shuttle-bus queues that build quickly on warm days. The surrounding beech forest, part of a separate UNESCO World Heritage listing for ancient beech forests, offers additional walking trails for visitors with extra time.
