Lower Saxony is Germany's second-largest state by area, stretching from the North Sea coast and the East Frisian islands down through rolling farmland to the forested Harz mountains on its southern border. Its capital, Hannover, is best known for the Herrenhausen Gardens and a compact, walkable Old Town, but the state's UNESCO credentials lie elsewhere: the Romanesque churches of Hildesheim, the thousand-year Rammelsberg silver mine above Goslar, and the vast tidal mudflats of the Wadden Sea along the coast. Half-timbered towns like Celle and Lüneburg preserve centuries of Hanseatic and salt-trading wealth, while Wolfsburg's Autostadt and the university town of Göttingen add an industrial and academic counterpoint to the state's historic core.

Lower Saxony has a temperate maritime climate along the North Sea coast and East Frisian Islands that transitions to a more continental pattern inland toward Hannover and Braunschweig, and to a cooler, wetter upland climate in the Harz mountains. Winters (December-February) are mild on the coast but colder in the Hannover basin, with average highs of 4-6°C and lows near or below freezing; the Harz uplands are colder still and see regular snow, including on the Brocken summit. Summers (June-August) are warm rather than hot, with average highs of 21-24°C and a mild July rainfall peak from short afternoon showers. Spring and autumn are mild transitional seasons, with spring bringing Herrenhausen's blooms and autumn bringing the Harz's foliage and, in late summer, the Lüneburg Heath's heather bloom. Precipitation is moderate and fairly evenly distributed year-round.
