Pilsum Lighthouse, East Frisian Coast

The Pilsumer Leuchtturm is a small red-and-white lighthouse standing alone in open pastureland just behind the sea dike near the East Frisian village of Pilsum, and its classic frame places the tower off-center against an open sky, with the flat coastal grassland or grazing sheep as foreground and, at low tide, the Wadden Sea mudflats visible beyond the dike. The tower faces the North Sea to the north, so sunset silhouettes work well from the landward side looking north, while blue-hour shots after sunset use the last color in the sky behind the tower's red-and-white bands; the lighthouse is also floodlit after dark, giving a warm-toned option distinct from the daytime shots most visitors capture. Spring and summer bring green foreground grass at the dike base, while winter's bare pasture and low sun angle suit starker, more graphic compositions. Because the lighthouse gained wide recognition through German film and television, it draws a steady stream of day-trippers and coach tours in summer, particularly around midday, so early morning or evening visits give the most solitude for a clean, empty-foreground composition; a small dedicated parking area near the site can also fill on peak summer weekends. There is no entrance fee to view or photograph the lighthouse from the surrounding pasture, and the tower itself is not open to climb. Tripods are permitted on the public grass and dike path around the site. Drone flights over the lighthouse and surrounding coastal area require observing the general German drone regulations for populated areas and the adjacent Wadden Sea National Park boundary a short distance to the north, where drone flights are prohibited.
