Oldenburg Kohlfahrt Cabbage Hike and Feast

Bümmersteder Krug, an inn on the outskirts of Oldenburg, hosts this traditional Kohlfahrt outing that combines a countryside walk with a seated Grünkohl mit Pinkel feast. Groups set out on foot from a starting point near Sandkruger Straße and follow a route through the surrounding farmland and woods, stopping at one or two taverns along the way for a warming drink, before arriving back at the Krug for the main meal. The feast itself centers on Grünkohl, slow-cooked curly kale, served with Pinkel sausage, Kassler smoked pork, and boiled potatoes, following the Oldenburg region's classic winter preparation. Traditional Kohlfahrt games, such as a competitive card or dice round played along the route, are included as part of the outing's social character. Included in the price are the guided walking route, the shared feast, and participation in the games; not included is transport to the starting point or additional rounds of drinks at the wayside taverns. The event runs in German and is best suited to groups rather than solo travelers, since much of the tradition is built around communal walking and shared tables. The walk covers several kilometers of flat countryside terrain, so sturdy waterproof footwear is recommended, and the season runs October through March when Grünkohl is at its best after the season's first frost.
