Autostadt, Wolfsburg

Autostadt is a car-themed visitor park in Wolfsburg, built beside the Volkswagen factory and opened in 2000 on landscaped grounds bordering the factory's canal harbor. The park is organized around individual pavilions for VW Group brands, including Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, Skoda, SEAT, Bentley, and Lamborghini, each with its own architecture and exhibits ranging from historic models to interactive design displays. The centerpiece for many visitors is the pair of glass Auto Towers, 20-story silos where new Volkswagen and Audi cars are stored before delivery, visible moving through the towers via an automated system that can be watched from an observation platform. The ZeitHaus automobile museum houses a chronological collection of more than 250 vehicles spanning over a century of automotive history, from early motorized carriages to modern concept cars. Outdoor areas include test tracks where visitors can drive current VW Group models, a Kinder Autostadt area for children to drive small electric cars, and landscaped gardens along the harbor. A full visit covering several brand pavilions and the ZeitHaus typically takes a full day; visitors focused on just the ZeitHaus and one or two pavilions can manage it in four to five hours. The park is busiest during summer school holidays and weekends, when families dominate the crowds and test-drive slots book up quickly; weekday visits outside peak season offer shorter waits at popular pavilions and easier access to test drives.
