Marksburg Castle, Braubach

Marksburg Castle stands on a conical hill above the town of Braubach on the Middle Rhine and holds the distinction of being the only hilltop castle along that stretch of the river never destroyed by war or later demolished for stone, preserving a largely unbroken sequence of medieval and early modern construction visible in a single structure. The core of the castle dates from the early 13th century, when it served as a strategic stronghold for regional lords controlling river traffic and tolls; successive owners expanded the fortifications through the 14th to 16th centuries, adding a Gothic keep, a Renaissance-era battery for early cannon, and a network of defensive walls that survive intact. Because Marksburg escaped the wave of castle demolitions that followed the wars of the late 17th century and the general decline of hilltop fortresses in the 18th and 19th centuries, it became a reference model for castle preservation; the German Castles Association (Deutsche Burgenvereinigung) established its headquarters there in 1900 and has overseen the site's conservation since, using it as a training and research base for medieval architecture and restoration techniques. Guided tours, which are the only way to see the interior, pass through the knights' hall, the chapel, a well-preserved kitchen with period cooking implements, and a herb garden cultivated with medicinal plants historically grown at fortified sites. A small armory displays swords, halberds, and early firearms illustrating the castle's defensive history. The site was included in the UNESCO World Heritage inscription of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley in 2002, recognized as part of the cultural landscape's exceptional concentration of surviving medieval castles.
