Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe — Hercules to Palace Trail

This descending walk through the UNESCO World Heritage Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe in Kassel follows the route of the park's historic water features, from the Hercules monument atop the Octagon down to Wilhelmshöhe Palace. The trailhead is the Herkules monument car park, reached by car via the L3220 with parking on-site, or by Kassel tram line 1 to the Wilhelmshöhe area followed by a connecting shuttle bus up to the Herkules on operating days. The 6-kilometer route descends about 30 meters net elevation gain overall (with a steep upper drop from the Octagon), following paved paths and stone steps through parkland and forest, with no exposure but some steep, uneven sections near the water features that require care. Shade comes from mature parkland trees for much of the descent, with open views near the Octagon terrace at the top. The route passes the Steinhöfer waterfall and a historic aqueduct bridge, both part of the park's 18th-century hydraulic engineering, most dramatic when the water features run on their scheduled days. The Löwenburg mock-medieval castle lies a short detour off the main path and makes a good rest stop partway down. The walk ends at Wilhelmshöhe Palace, with its formal gardens and museum, a natural finish point with tram connections back into central Kassel. Water and food are available at kiosks near both the Herkules and the palace, but there are few facilities along the mid-route forest stretches.
