The Palmengarten in the Westend district of Frankfurt am Main is one of the largest botanical gardens in Germany, covering about 22 hectares on Siesmayerstraße in the state of Hesse. Opened in the nineteenth century, it combines landscaped parkland with a large complex of glasshouses that recreate different climate zones, from tropical rainforest to arid desert. Visitors walking through the glasshouses move from humid lowland rainforest and cloud-forest displays to cacti and succulents within a short distance, which makes the garden useful even on cold or wet days. Outdoors, the grounds include a lake with a fountain and rowing boats in season, a rose garden, rock gardens, themed plant collections and broad lawns where local families picnic. The historic Palmenhaus is the architectural centrepiece, and seasonal flower shows change the character of the garden through the year. Cafés and restaurants on site allow a break between sections. A full visit takes two to three hours, longer in spring when the blossom and rose displays peak. Late April to June is the most colourful period, while autumn brings foliage and winter makes the glasshouses a warm refuge. Crowds are heaviest on sunny weekends and during events such as summer concerts and special exhibitions, so weekday mornings give the most peaceful walking. The garden is a short walk from the neighbouring Grüneburgpark and from the Senckenberg Naturmuseum, so the three can be combined in a day. Hours vary by season, with later closing from March to October, and the glasshouses close one hour after the ticket office. Children up to age 17 enter free, and photography for private use is welcome throughout the grounds, with the glasshouses offering good light and strong colours.
