Wilhelmshöhe Palace

Wilhelmshöhe Palace sits at the foot of Kassel's Bergpark, at the base of the cascade axis that runs up to the Hercules monument on the hill above. Built in Neoclassical style around 1800 for the Hessian landgraves and later electors, the palace's centerpiece is the Old Masters Picture Gallery, which holds a significant collection of 15th- to 18th-century European painting, including works by Rembrandt, Rubens, Titian, and Van Dyck. Visitors move through a sequence of grand state apartments before reaching the gallery rooms, which display the paintings largely as they were arranged historically, grouped by school and period rather than strict chronology. The palace terrace offers views back down the park's cascade route and across the surrounding gardens. A visit to the picture gallery and state apartments typically takes an hour and a half to two hours, making it a manageable stop compared to larger national museums. Because the palace sits within the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe UNESCO World Heritage ensemble, most visitors combine it with a walk up to the Hercules monument and Wasserspiele cascades on the same day. Weekday mornings tend to be quietest, while weekends and Wasserspiele show days bring larger crowds through the surrounding park and palace grounds.
