Cuxhaven and the North Sea Coast

Cuxhaven sits about 140 km north of Bremen at the mouth of the Elbe, where the estuary opens into the North Sea. Reaching it by train takes 1h40-2h, usually with a change onto a connecting regional service at Bremerhaven or Sande, while driving the A27 motorway the whole way takes about 1h30-1h45 and gives more flexibility for a beach day. The town offers the region's most accessible true sea beaches, at Duhnen and Sahlenburg, both backed by rows of the wicker Strandkorb beach chairs typical of German North Sea resorts. At low tide, guided or self-guided Wattenmeer mudflat walks stretch out toward the Wadden Sea's tidal flats, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed ecosystem, and the harbour area gives clear views of container ships heading in and out of Hamburg. A practical day starts with an early train to maximise beach or mudflat time, breaks for a seafood lunch, such as fresh Krabben (North Sea shrimp) rolls, at a harbourside stand, and spends the afternoon either sunbathing at Duhnen or joining a low-tide mudflat walk timed to the day's tide table. Because the appeal is largely the beach and open-air activities, Cuxhaven suits a trip between May and September, though the Wattenmeer walks remain worthwhile year-round for visitors dressed for the wind.
