The Altmarkt itself has functioned as a trading square since at least 1720, giving the market a continuity with the city's older commercial history, distinct from the newer shopping mall retail nearby. Smaller supplementary markets run on Wednesdays and Fridays on the forecourt of the Stadthalle (City Hall), a short walk away, for shoppers who cannot make the larger Thursday market. The area is fully pedestrianized and reachable by all four of Cottbus's central tram lines.
