Black Forest Open Air Museum Vogtsbauernhof

The Black Forest Open Air Museum Vogtsbauernhof is built around the Vogtsbauernhof itself, a preserved 16th-century farmhouse, with five additional historic farmhouses relocated from across the Black Forest region and reassembled on the site. Each building demonstrates a different regional style of the traditional Black Forest farmhouse, characterised by sweeping thatched or shingled roofs that shelter living quarters, barn and threshing floor under one roof, a design adapted to the region's steep terrain and harsh winters. Costumed demonstrators show traditional crafts including weaving, baking in wood-fired ovens, and blacksmithing, and the grounds include working water mills, a sawmill and farm animals typical of the historical Black Forest economy. A visit takes two to three hours to walk between the farmhouses and watch demonstrations, and autumn is especially atmospheric as the surrounding hillside forest changes colour around the wooden buildings. Weekends bring more craft demonstrations but also larger crowds than weekday visits.
