Partnach Gorge

Partnach Gorge (Partnachklamm) is a limestone canyon cut by the Partnach stream in the mountains directly above Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria. The gorge stretches 700 metres through vertical rock walls reaching 80 metres in height, with a walkway bolted to the cliff face passing through two tunnels, over wooden bridges, and alongside a torrent of water fed by meltwater from the surrounding peaks. The entrance is a 20-minute walk from the Olympic Ski Stadium at the southern edge of Garmisch-Partenkirchen; horse-drawn carriages operate from near the stadium to the gorge entrance in peak season. The walkway is exposed to spray throughout — in some sections visitors walk through cascades dripping from the rock overhead — making a waterproof jacket and appropriate footwear essential regardless of external weather. In winter, the gorge transforms dramatically: reduced water flow exposes the limestone in shades of ochre and turquoise, icicles form on the walls up to 10 metres in length, and frozen spray creates sculptural ice formations on the path itself. The gorge is open in winter but conditions require care on icy surfaces. Beyond the gorge exit, a forest trail continues to the Bockhütte mountain hut and connects to the Zugspitze hiking network for experienced walkers. The gorge is a natural monument and one of the most impressive geological features accessible on foot in the German Alps. Midday in summer sees the highest visitor numbers; early morning provides the most dramatic light in the upper reaches.
