Vanhankaupunginkoski is a set of rapids at the mouth of the Vantaa river in the Vanhakaupunki area of Helsinki, Finland, close to the Viikinranta shore and the Vanhankaupunginlahti bird-watching area. The spot combines running water, rocks, an old dam and fishing stations with a protected wetland bay, which makes it one of the more varied nature locations within the city limits. Photographers use two main frames.

At the rapids, a tripod and neutral density filter turn the flowing water into silky streams around dark rocks, with the old industrial and dam structures forming a leading line. Along the bay shore and the bird-watching routes, a telephoto lens (100-400 mm) captures waterfowl, waders and gulls, and in the migration seasons large flocks gather on the water. April and May are the best months for bird migration, and autumn brings colour in the riverside trees and softer light. Dawn and dusk give soft, low-angle light and the greatest bird activity, while midday sun creates harsh highlights on the white water and makes long exposures difficult without a strong ND filter. Overcast days suit the waterfall frames, as contrast stays manageable. The area is a popular spot for local walkers and anglers, especially in summer and on weekends, but tripod positions along the riverbank are usually easy to find, and early mornings are quiet. Public access is free, and tripods are generally acceptable for personal photography; bird photographers should keep a respectful distance and avoid disturbing nesting or resting birds, and some bird-protection areas have seasonal restrictions on entry that should be checked at hel.fi. Drone flights are subject to Traficom rules and are discouraged near bird-protection areas. Wet rocks near the rapids are slippery, so sturdy shoes help. The area is reachable by public transport from central Helsinki, and the nearest toilets and cafes are in the Viikki and Arabia districts.
