Hanko East Harbour (Itäsatama) lies along Rantakatu near the Casino area of Hanko, a seaside town on the southern tip of the Uusimaa region of Finland, about 125 km west of Helsinki. The marina and promenade form a photogenic frame of moored sailing boats, masts and wooden villas with the open Baltic horizon behind. Photographers typically work from the promenade and the jetties, shooting along the line of boats with a standard zoom, or using a polarizer to deepen the sky and manage reflections on the water. The harbour faces east, so sunrise light rises over the water and gives clean, warm colour on the hulls and the villas, while late golden hour side-lights the boats and masts from behind the town. In calm conditions, reflections of the boats and villas double the composition, and twilight with a tripod produces long exposures with smooth water and glowing windows. June to August brings the busiest boating season and the most boats in the marina, while quiet autumn light, with fewer boats and softer colour, also works well. Winter is calm and often icy, and the harbour is usually empty. The promenade is public and free to walk at all times, and tripods are normally acceptable if they stay clear of the jetty walkways and boat access. In July the harbour area is busy with sailors and visitors, especially in the evening, so sunrise and early morning give the cleanest frames. Drone use in the area is subject to Traficom rules and local restrictions, so the Droneinfo map should be checked. The Casino area and the nearby wooden spa villas are within a short walk and combine well with a harbour shoot, and cafes and public toilets are found along the waterfront in summer. Wind off the Baltic can be strong, so a stable tripod and warm layers are advisable.
