Climate Overview
Eritrea has two distinct climate zones shaped by its dramatic topography. Asmara, at 2,300m altitude, enjoys a temperate highland climate with mild temperatures year-round (15-25°C), making it one of the most pleasant capitals in Africa. The Red Sea coast including Massawa is one of the world's hottest regions, reaching 40-45°C in summer and remaining very warm even in winter. The highlands experience a rainy season from June to September; the coast is arid year-round with occasional winter rains.

Seasonal Breakdown
Detailed information for each season.
🌸 Spring
Mar-May
Dry and pleasant in the highlands with warming temperatures and occasional wildflowers on highland meadows. The coast begins to heat up significantly by May. Generally a good visiting period before the highland rains.
☀️ Summer
Jun-Sep
Highland rainy season with afternoon thunderstorms turning Eritrea lush and green. Asmara temperatures remain mild (18-22°C). The coast becomes extremely hot (38-45°C). Hiking trails can be muddy. This is actually peak season for diaspora visits.
🍂 Fall
Oct-Nov
One of the two best visiting windows. Rains end and the highlands are lush and green from summer rains, skies clear, and temperatures are ideal. The coast begins cooling to more bearable temperatures. Excellent for photography with clear air.
❄️ Winter
Dec-Feb
The other prime visiting period. Asmara is cool (12-20°C), clear-skied, and very comfortable. The Red Sea coast is at its most pleasant for beach activities (28-32°C). Christmas and Timkat celebrations in January add cultural richness.
