Egyptian Museum (Tahrir Square)

The Egyptian Museum on Midan El Tahrir in central Cairo is the world's largest repository of ancient Egyptian antiquities, housing more than 120,000 objects spanning 5,000 years of civilization. The distinctive pink neoclassical building, opened in 1902, is arranged chronologically across two floors and dozens of interconnected galleries. The ground floor displays large statues, sarcophagi, and architectural fragments, including the Narmer Palette — Egypt's earliest example of hieroglyphic writing — and the colossal statues of Amenhotep III and Tiye. The upper floor houses the treasure-filled rooms dedicated to Tutankhamun, whose golden funerary mask, gilded shrine, and golden throne remain among the most spectacular artifacts in human history. Separate tickets are required for the Royal Mummy Room, which holds 27 pharaonic mummies including Ramesses II and Seti I displayed in climate-controlled cases. The museum's labyrinthine layout and dense installations can feel overwhelming; hiring a licensed guide significantly enhances the experience by navigating the highlights efficiently. Key galleries include Room 3 (Tutankhamun jewelry), Room 35 (animal mummies), and the Predynastic gallery on the ground floor. The museum is busiest between 10 AM and 1 PM; arriving at the 9 AM opening allows 90 minutes of calmer browsing before tour groups arrive. Plan three to four hours for a comprehensive visit or two hours focused on the Tutankhamun galleries and a selection of ground-floor highlights.
