Aswan Family Travel Guide 2025
Everything families need to know for a successful trip to Aswan with kids.
Aswan is Egypt's southernmost governorate, a sun-drenched city on the banks of the Nile renowned for its ancient Nubian heritage, towering pharaonic monuments, and dramatic desert-island scenery. It serves as the gateway to iconic sites including Philae Temple, the Aswan High Dam, and the legendary Abu Simbel temples.
Top Family Activities
The best experiences for families in Aswan.
Sunset Felucca Sailing
A slow, peaceful sail among the Nile islands and granite boulders โ young children love the boat experience and the gentle movement; teenagers enjoy the freedom; parents appreciate the spectacular sunset light
Elephantine Island Ferry Adventure
Taking the public motorboat to the island is itself an adventure for young children; the painted Nubian houses with their murals of crocodiles and camels delight primary school age children; the ancient ruins spark curiosity in older children
Camel Trek on the West Bank
A camel ride from the west bank ferry landing through the desert to St. Simeon's Monastery is a highlight for children of almost every age. Most families ride two to a camel (adult + child). The camel handlers are experienced with young riders.
Nubian Village Visit (Gharb Soheil)
Children are fascinated by the brightly coloured houses, the henna artists, the pet crocodiles and the warmth of Nubian family hospitality. Families are often invited into homes for tea and to see how karkadeh is prepared.
Philae Temple Boat and Exploration
The motorboat ride to the island is exciting; the colourful painted reliefs, massive pylons and stories of Isis and Osiris captivate children who have learned about Egyptian mythology. The evening Sound & Light Show is recommended for ages 7+ (it runs quite late).
Crocodile Museum (Kom Ombo Day Trip)
The mummified crocodiles and croc-related artefacts at Kom Ombo's Crocodile Museum are a universal hit with children. Combined with the dramatic riverside temple, this makes for an excellent half-day excursion 45 km north.
Aswan Botanical Garden Walk (Kitchener's Island)
The shaded garden island is a rare cool and green space in the Aswan desert setting. Children enjoy spotting exotic birds, unusual plants and the tiny rowboat journey to reach the island. Picnicking is possible.
Unfinished Obelisk Discovery Tour
The idea of a 1,200-tonne obelisk still lying exactly where ancient workers left it 3,500 years ago captures the imagination of curious children. The quarry landscape is also visually impressive.
Abu Simbel Day Trip
Abu Simbel's colossal statues โ 20 metres tall, carved from a solid cliff โ are the most dramatic ancient monuments children can see in Egypt. The flight over the desert is part of the excitement. The temples themselves take about 1.5 hours to explore.
Nubian Museum Interactive Visit
The Nubian Museum's outdoor sculpture garden and well-lit interactive displays are accessible to children from an early age. Audio guides are available. The garden is large enough for young children to explore freely between exhibits.

The best strategy in summer is: early morning temple visit (6-9 AM), indoor museum (10 AM-noon), pool at hotel (noon-4 PM), evening boat trip or corniche walk (5-7 PM)
Children under 4 are often admitted free or at heavily reduced rates at Egyptian temples โ check at the ticket office
Sunstroke is the main medical risk for children in Aswan โ a full sun protection routine is non-negotiable
Egyptian pharmacies (eczane) stock international children's medications; several are on the corniche and near the souk
