Gorge Swimming in Titou Gorge, near Laudat village, Dominica, Dominica

Caving at Titou Gorge

moderateYear-round$10-20

Swim through the narrow volcanic gorge at Titou Gorge, navigating 20-foot walls in near-darkness to reach a hidden waterfall cascade. Made famous by Pirates of the Caribbean, this adrenaline-charged swim is one of the island's most memorable experiences.

Titou Gorge is a narrow volcanic canyon near the village of Laudat in central Dominica, approximately 8 km east of Roseau in the foothills of Morne Trois Pitons National Park. The gorge was formed by the erosion of soft volcanic tuff between harder basalt walls over thousands of years, creating a slot canyon with walls rising 6–8 metres above a clear freshwater pool that leads deeper into the hillside. The primary activity is gorge swimming: visitors swim through the canyon in near-darkness to reach a hidden waterfall approximately 50 metres inside the gorge entrance.

The gorge gained international recognition as a filming location for the 2006 film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. At the entrance, the pool is broad enough for comfortable swimming; the channel then narrows to roughly 2–3 metres wide as it curves inside the cliff face. The light dims progressively, and the final section before the waterfall is in near-total darkness except for light from the cascade ahead. The waterfall itself drops about 3 metres into a deep plunge pool; swimmers can position directly under the fall or rest against the rock walls to absorb the experience.

The gorge is accessible independently: an entrance fee of EC$10–20 is collected at the trailhead booth, and no guide is required for the standard gorge swim. Life jackets are available for hire at the entrance and are strongly recommended for non-strong swimmers. The swim into the gorge takes around 10–15 minutes each way at a relaxed pace. Some operators include the gorge as a combined experience with the Boiling Lake hike, since both trailheads are located in the same area near Laudat.

Swimming ability is required. The gorge walls are slippery and the narrow channel prevents easy exit once inside; non-swimmers should not attempt the experience. Children aged 8 and over can typically manage the gorge swim accompanied by an adult.
