La Casona de Santa Rosa
The reconstructed colonial hacienda that served as the site of two important battles: the Battle of Santa Rosa in 1856 when Costa Rican forces repelled William Walker's filibuster army, and a skirmish in 1955 against an invasion backed by Nicaraguan dictator Somoza. The original hacienda was burned by arsonists in 2001 and rebuilt as a museum.
Iglesia de San Blas, Nicoya
The colonial church in Nicoya's central plaza is one of the oldest churches in Costa Rica, dating to around 1644. The simple but elegant Spanish colonial architecture is well-preserved. The church stands at the heart of the town where the 1824 annexation to Costa Rica was decided.
