Best Time to Visit

Months to Avoid

June to August (winter)

Climate Overview

Chile's climate is extraordinarily diverse across its 4,300 km length. The north is dominated by the hyper-arid Atacama Desert (essentially no rain, intense sun, cold nights). Central Chile including Santiago has a Mediterranean climate with hot dry summers and mild wet winters. The Lake District receives abundant rainfall year-round. Patagonia in the far south has cold, windy, and unpredictable conditions year-round. Visitors must pack for the specific region they're visiting — not one climate fits all of Chile.

Seasonal Breakdown

Detailed information for each season.

🌸 Spring

Sep-Nov

Temperatures warm, wildflowers bloom in the Atacama after rare rains, and Torres del Paine opens its trekking season. Santiago has mild pleasant days (15-20°C) and occasional showers.

Tips: Excellent shoulder season for Torres del Paine (October-November) — fewer crowds than December-February and beautiful light. Pack layers for Patagonia.

☀️ Summer

Dec-Feb

Peak season across Chile. Santiago is hot (28-33°C), Patagonia has its longest and most stable days, and Atacama is sunny but extremely hot by day. Easter Island is warm and humid.

Tips: Book Torres del Paine accommodation 6-12 months ahead. Sunscreen SPF 50+ essential everywhere. Patagonian winds at their strongest in December-January.

🍂 Fall

Mar-May

Possibly the best season for Patagonia — autumn foliage turns Torres del Paine's lenga beech forests gold and red, crowds thin, and weather is still stable. Santiago cools pleasantly to 15-22°C.

Tips: April is considered by many the finest month for Torres del Paine photography. Wine harvest (vendimia) festivals occur in Maipo and Colchagua valleys in March-April.

❄️ Winter

Jun-Aug

Winter brings rain and cold to Santiago (5-12°C) with fog and smog issues. Patagonia is harsh with most refugios closed. Atacama is cold at night but spectacularly clear. Ski resorts near Santiago (El Colorado, Valle Nevado) are at their best.

Tips: Santiago ski resorts are a unique drawcard — world-class powder skiing 60 km from a major capital. Atacama desert excursions are excellent in winter with better visibility and fewer tourists.
