Chad is a vast landlocked country in Central Africa offering some of Africa's most remote and spectacular landscapes. From the wildlife-rich Zakouma National Park to the otherworldly rock formations of the UNESCO-listed Ennedi Massif, Chad rewards adventurous travelers with authentic experiences far from tourist crowds.
Best photo spots
Iconic and lesser-known locations worth shooting.
Aloba Arch, Ennedi Massif
One of the world's largest natural rock arches at 120m high, glowing orange-red in golden hour light against deep blue desert sky. Wide-angle and telephoto lenses both essential to capture both scale and detail.
Best time: sunrise and sunset
Guelta d'Archei with Camel Caravans
The most iconic image in Chad — hundreds of camels surrounding a desert rock pool, framed by towering sandstone walls, with Saharan crocodiles lurking in the water. Nomadic Tubu herders bring their animals here to drink.
Best time: early morning (7-9 AM)
Zakouma Elephant Herds at Rigueik Pan
Africa's largest elephant herd (500+ individuals) gathering at seasonal water holes in warm golden grassland light. The scale of the herds creates an extraordinary composition unlike any other safari destination.
Best time: golden hour (6:00-8:00 AM)
Ounianga Lakes from Above
The 18 interconnected desert lakes of Ounianga display striking color contrasts from deep blue to green to turquoise, framed by ochre sand dunes and dark palm groves. Drone photography is spectacular here (check current regulations).
Best time: midday for color contrast
N'Djamena Grand Marché in Morning Light
The vibrant Central Market at peak morning activity — colorful textiles, spice pyramids, and animated vendors in warm low-angle morning light. Chad's most accessible photography location within N'Djamena.
Best time: early morning (7-9 AM)
Chari River Sunset, N'Djamena Waterfront
Traditional pirogue fishing boats silhouetted against a copper Chari River at sunset, with the Cameroon bank visible across the water. Walk south from Grand Marché toward the Friendship Bridge for unobstructed views.
Best time: 30 minutes before sunset
Thursday Livestock Market (Camel Market)
One of Central Africa's largest camel and cattle markets comes alive at dawn with hundreds of nomadic herders in traditional robes surrounded by camels, goats, and sheep in swirling dust.
Best time: early morning (6-8 AM)

Photography tips
Make your shots stand out.
Always ask permission (in French: 'Puis-je vous photographier?' or Arabic: 'Mumkin assawwiruk?') before photographing people — respect refusal and move on
Photography of military installations, checkpoints, government buildings, airports, and bridges is strictly illegal in Chad — can result in camera confiscation and arrest
Use a polarizing filter for the Ounianga Lakes to cut glare and maximize lake color contrast against sand
Protect your equipment from fine Saharan dust — use sealed bags and lens caps at all times when not shooting; dust penetrates camera bags within hours
A telephoto lens (300-500mm) is essential for Zakouma wildlife photography — animals are often at distance in open grassland
