Schwartz's Deli

Schwartz's Hebrew Delicatessen on Boulevard Saint-Laurent in Montreal is one of Canada's most legendary eating establishments, in continuous operation since 1928. Founded by Romanian-Jewish immigrant Reuben Schwartz, the deli has maintained its recipes, character, and counter-style service largely unchanged across nearly a century. The smoked meat sandwich is the singular reason most visitors make the pilgrimage: thick-cut smoked brisket, cured and spiced in-house, piled high on rye bread and typically ordered medium-fat for the ideal flavour. The deli is tiny — perhaps 40 seats — and operates on a no-reservation, no-credit-card basis: the line stretches down the sidewalk at peak hours and diners share tables with strangers. The atmosphere is intentionally spartan: menus on the wall, brisk service, fluorescent lighting, and a kitchen visible through a pass-through. The menu extends to poutine, smoked meat platters, pickles, and coleslaw, but the sandwich is the focus. Bring-your-own-wine culture is part of the Schwartz's tradition — a nearby dépanneur (corner store) sells bottles for those who want to drink with their meal.
