Stone warehouse built in 1803 and used by the North West Company and later the Hudson's Bay Company to store furs and trade goods for the canoe brigades heading west.
The Fur Trade at Lachine National Historic Site sits at 1255 Boulevard Saint-Joseph in Lachine, a borough on the western edge of Montreal, Quebec, beside the Lachine Canal and Lake Saint-Louis. Its centrepiece is a stone warehouse built in 1803 for the North West Company, whose merchants organised canoe brigades that carried trade goods west from Lachine and brought furs back from the interior. After the merger of the North West Company and the Hudson's Bay Company in 1821, the building continued to serve the fur trade as a storage depot until around the middle of the 19th century. Lachine was the departure point because the Lachine Rapids stopped large vessels from going further upstream, so goods were transferred to canoes and wagons there. The building is a long, rectangular structure of local stone with thick walls and a pitched roof, typical of early 19th-century commercial storage in Lower Canada. Parks Canada preserves the warehouse and presents its interior through exhibits about the trade goods, the voyageurs, the Indigenous nations who were essential partners in the trade, and the global market for beaver pelts. The approach is thematic rather than strictly chronological, with objects, reconstructions, and text panels set in the original spaces. The grounds beside the water form a park with interpretive panels, and trails connect to the wider Lachine Canal corridor. The building has been conserved as a historic structure, and its seasonal programming means the interior opens mostly in summer. A visit typically takes an hour or less, and it combines easily with a walk or ride along the canal path or a stop at the nearby Lachine museums.
