Fort York National Historic Site at 250 Fort York Boulevard sits between the Fort York and Liberty Village neighbourhoods of Toronto, Ontario, and preserves the garrison established in 1793 to defend the new town of York. It was the scene of the Battle of York in April 1813, during the War of 1812, when American forces captured the town and the fort's magazine was blown up. The site is recognised as holding the largest collection of original War of 1812 buildings in Canada, including the Blockhouses, the Officers' Quarters, the Soldiers' Barracks and the Stone Magazine. Visitors tour restored rooms furnished to show garrison life, walk the earthen ramparts for views toward the lake and the downtown skyline, and see cannon and military artefacts. The Visitor Centre, which is partly built into a berm, offers exhibits on the battle and the wider history of the city, and a short film. In the warmer months, costumed interpreters conduct musket and cannon demonstrations and march in drills, which is why summer weekends are the most lively times to visit, although they can also be the busiest. Most visits take 1.5 to 2 hours, and the grounds also host events, such as Indigenous cultural gatherings and winter programming. Weekday mornings out of season are quieter. Photo angles include the ramparts looking toward the CN Tower, the stone barracks and the contrast between the old fort and the surrounding condominiums. The site is reached by TTC streetcar 509 Harbourfront or 511 Bathurst to Fort York Boulevard, or by a ten-minute walk from Bathurst station, and there is a nearby bike route along the Fort York Trail. Admission fees apply to the fort and are posted on the City of Toronto website.
