Sunset Beach is a quieter, sheltered beach at 1204 Beach Avenue in Vancouver's West End, British Columbia, about 2 km west of downtown, on the south side of English Bay next to the False Creek entrance. It sits beside the seawall and is separated from busier English Bay Beach by a short walk. The shoreline is a strip of sand and pebbles with grass and trees behind it, and the water is cold Pacific seawater that is usually calm with no meaningful surf. The beach is narrower than neighbouring beaches, so it suits relaxing, walking and people-watching more than long beach days. The mood is subdued and local: residents from the West End and Yaletown walk dogs, jog and cycle past, while some visitors stop for views toward the bay and the mountains. Public art, including pieces along the waterfront, adds to the walk. Amenities include lifeguards in season, public washrooms and the seawall promenade; there is no extensive concession, but cafes and shops on Beach Avenue, Davie Street and Denman Street are close. Access is by TransLink bus 6, by walking or cycling the seawall from downtown or English Bay, or by Aquabus from Granville Island to Sunset Beach. Parking is limited on surrounding streets. The beach is a good alternative to English Bay when it is crowded, and is a short stroll to the Inukshuk and English Bay Beach for those wanting more activity. The summer months from June to September have the best weather and the lifeguards, though the seawall path is enjoyable in any season for sunset walks and evening photography over the bay.
