Capilano Suspension Bridge

The Capilano Suspension Bridge in North Vancouver, British Columbia, spans 137 metres across the Capilano River gorge and hangs 70 metres above the rushing water below — high enough that the bridge sways perceptibly underfoot, creating a genuine sense of exposure. The original bridge was built in 1889 using hemp rope; the current steel cable structure has been in place since 1956. The site has expanded well beyond the bridge itself: the Treetops Adventure extends through the old-growth forest canopy on a series of suspension bridges anchored to Douglas firs as tall as 60 metres, while the Cliffwalk cantilevers out from granite cliff faces above the river on a narrow metal walkway with transparent sections underfoot. All elements are included in a single admission price. Interpretive signage along the forested path addresses the ecology of the coastal temperate rainforest and the history of the Capilano area's Squamish First Nation. In December, Canyon Lights transforms the entire property with hundreds of thousands of illuminated lights through the forest canopy — one of Vancouver's most popular seasonal events. A free shuttle bus runs regularly from downtown Vancouver to the entrance gate at 3735 Capilano Road, making the attraction accessible without a car. Cruise ship passengers are a major visitor contingent, and the bridge is at its busiest between 10 AM and 2 PM.
