The Butchart Gardens at 800 Benvenuto Avenue in Brentwood Bay, British Columbia, occupies 22 hectares on the Saanich Peninsula of Vancouver Island, about 20 kilometres north of Victoria. The site was a worked-out limestone quarry belonging to Robert Pim Butchart, whose wife Jennie began planting the quarry floor in 1909; the resulting Sunken Garden is still the most celebrated feature, with its terraced beds descending into the old quarry pit and visible from a viewing mound at the top edge. The Rose Garden, Italian Garden, and Japanese Garden occupy distinct sections of the grounds and maintain their distinct characters through the season.
