Best Time to Visit

Months to Avoid

April to September (hot and rainy season)

Climate Overview

Burkina Faso has a tropical savanna climate with two distinct seasons — a long dry season (October to May) and a shorter rainy season (June to September). Temperatures are consistently hot year-round, ranging from a comfortable 25°C in December to a brutal 42°C in April. The Harmattan wind blows dusty, dry air south from the Sahara between December and February, reducing visibility and causing skin and respiratory dryness. The coolest and most pleasant period for visiting is November to February.

Seasonal Breakdown

Detailed information for each season.

🌸 Spring

Mar-May

The hottest and most difficult season, with temperatures reaching 38-42°C before the rains arrive. April and May are the peak of the hot season when the heat is oppressive and travel is challenging. The first rains of May bring some relief.

Tips: Avoid if possible; if visiting, stay hydrated with 4+ litres daily, schedule outdoor activities only in early morning, and ensure accommodation has reliable AC and generator

☀️ Summer

Jun-Sep

The rainy season brings relief from the heat with temperatures dropping to 28-35°C and dramatic afternoon storms. Waterfalls are at their most spectacular in July-September. Roads to rural areas can become impassable.

Tips: Best time for waterfall visits; carry rain gear; check road conditions before driving to remote sites; malaria risk highest so use repellent and nets

🍂 Fall

Oct-Nov

The transition from rains to dry season — vegetation is lushest, temperatures are moderate (27-34°C), wildlife is active, and roads have dried but waterfalls still flow. One of the best periods to visit Burkina Faso.

Tips: Excellent for wildlife viewing at Nazinga and natural site visits; book accommodation early as it fills during this pleasant period

❄️ Winter

Dec-Feb

The cool dry season is the most comfortable time to visit, with temperatures of 20-32°C and pleasant evenings. The Harmattan dust haze can reduce visibility for photography but wildlife concentrates around water sources in dry season.

Tips: Best overall season for travel; pack layers for cool evenings (15-18°C possible in December); bring moisturiser and lip balm for Harmattan dryness; FESPACO in February (odd years) creates extraordinary atmosphere
