Brunei History & Heritage Guide 2025
Journey through the fascinating history and heritage sites of Brunei.
Brunei Darussalam, the Abode of Peace, is a small but wealthy sultanate on the island of Borneo. This pristine nation offers a unique blend of opulent Islamic architecture, pristine rainforests, and traditional water villages alongside modern luxury.
Brunei is one of Southeast Asia's oldest sultanates, with a history stretching back over 1,000 years. At its peak in the 15th and 16th centuries, the Bruneian Empire controlled much of Borneo and parts of the Philippines before European colonialism gradually reduced its power. The discovery of oil in 1929 transformed Brunei from a struggling state into one of the world's wealthiest nations per capita. Brunei gained independence from British protection on January 1, 1984, and today remains an absolute monarchy under Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, the 29th and longest-reigning sultan.
Historical Timeline
Key moments in Brunei's history.
Early Kingdom
Chinese records mention the kingdom of Po-ni, believed to be early Brunei, with trading contacts established with Tang Dynasty China. The settlement was likely centered on the mouth of the Brunei River.
Islamisation and Sultanate Formation
Islam arrives in Brunei through trade contacts with the Majapahit Empire and Muslim traders. The first Sultan, Muhammad Shah, converts to Islam and establishes the Sultanate of Brunei around 1363.
Golden Age of the Bruneian Empire
Brunei reaches its greatest territorial extent under Sultans Bolkiah (5th Sultan) and Hassan (9th Sultan), controlling most of Borneo, the Sulu Archipelago, and parts of Luzon in the Philippines.
European Contact
Ferdinand Magellan's expedition visits Brunei, with Antonio Pigafetta recording the opulence of the Bruneian court. European observers describe Kampong Ayer as 'Venice of the East.'
Spanish Assault
Spanish forces from the Philippines briefly capture and loot Bandar Seri Begawan before being repelled by disease. This marks the beginning of Brunei's gradual decline as a regional power.
James Brooke and Cession of Sarawak
James Brooke assists the Sultan in suppressing a rebellion and is rewarded with Sarawak as a personal fiefdom, becoming the 'White Rajah.' This begins the gradual cession of Bruneian territory to British interests.
British Protectorate
Brunei becomes a British protectorate, surrendering control of foreign affairs while maintaining internal self-governance. British Residents are appointed to advise the Sultan from 1906.
Discovery of Oil
Oil is discovered at Seria, transforming Brunei's economic fortunes. Commercial production begins and revenues from the oil industry rapidly modernize the country despite Japanese occupation during WWII.
Japanese Occupation
Japanese forces occupy Brunei during World War II, exploiting oil resources and causing significant civilian hardship. Liberation comes in June 1945 when Australian forces retake Brunei.
Brunei Revolt
A pro-democracy armed revolt led by A.M. Azahari is crushed with British military assistance. Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III uses this as justification to rule by emergency decree and ultimately declines to join Malaysia.
Independence
Brunei officially becomes a fully independent nation, with Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah declaring Brunei Darussalam ('Abode of Peace'). Brunei joins ASEAN and the United Nations the same year.
Sharia Penal Code
Brunei implements Phase 3 of the Sharia Penal Code, making it one of the few countries to apply strict Islamic criminal law. The move draws international controversy and debate.
