Getting Around São Paulo 2026

Transport in São Paulo decoded — what to use for which journey, and what each option costs.

São Paulo is Brazil's largest city and South America's biggest metropolis, a sprawling economic and cultural powerhouse known for its skyscraper-lined avenues, world-class museums, and one of the planet's most diverse restaurant scenes. Far from Brazil's beach image, São Paulo is a city of concrete, art, nightlife, and relentless energy, anchored by Avenida Paulista and a patchwork of distinct neighborhoods, from bohemian Vila Madalena to upscale Jardins.

Public
Extensive Metro (6 operating lines) and CPTM commuter rail cover much of the city, backed by a huge SPTrans municipal bus network; the Bilhete Único smart card integrates fares across all three
Taxi
Widely available at ranks, by phone, or via apps (99, regular radio taxis); metered fares are regulated and reasonably priced compared to many world capitals
Rental
Not recommended for visitors - São Paulo has some of the world's worst traffic congestion, a confusing one-way grid, aggressive driving, and the odd-even rodizio license-plate restriction on weekdays
Walking
Central districts like Centro, Paulista, and Vila Madalena are walkable, but the city is vast and spread out, so most trips between neighborhoods require transit

Transportation details

Full breakdown of how to get around.

São Paulo is Brazil's largest city and one of the largest in the world, so getting around efficiently means using its Metro and CPTM rail network wherever possible rather than the often-gridlocked roads. Six Metro lines and a wider CPTM commuter rail network cover a good share of the metropolitan area, both using the same Bilhete Union fare card that also works on SPTrans city buses. Ride-hailing apps (Uber, 99) are cheap, plentiful, and the practical choice for trips beyond rail coverage or late at night. Renting a car is rarely worthwhile given traffic congestion, the rodizio plate-restriction scheme, and scarce parking.

Transport tips

Travel smarter, not harder.

Tip

Buy a Bilhete Único card at any Metro or CPTM station to get discounted integrated fares between bus, Metro, and train within a set transfer window

Tip

Uber and 99 are the easiest way to get around outside the Metro's reach and are generally cheaper and safer than hailing a street taxi

Tip

Avoid driving in the city - the rodizio rule bans cars with certain final license-plate digits from the center on weekdays, and traffic (trânsito) can be gridlocked for hours

Tip

The Metro and CPTM are fastest during rush hour (7-9am, 5-8pm) when road traffic is worst, but trains are extremely crowded at those times

Tip

Airport transfers by app-based ride-hailing (Uber/99) from Guarulhos or Congonhas are usually cheaper and just as fast as pre-booked shuttles

Tip

Keep valuables out of sight on buses and the Metro, especially on crowded lines and at night

Tip

Google Maps and Moovit both give reliable real-time bus and Metro routing for São Paulo
