Feira da Liberdade

Feira da Liberdade takes over Praça da Liberdade and its surrounding streets every weekend, reflecting the neighborhood's history as São Paulo's traditional Japantown, settled by Japanese immigrants from the early twentieth century onward. The stalls sell East Asian street food rather than souvenirs aimed purely at tourists: yakisoba, takoyaki, gyoza, and skewered meats cooked to order alongside Korean and Chinese dishes, plus sweets such as taiyaki and mochi. A separate row of handicraft stalls sells origami, ceramics, and small Japanese-style crafts made by local artisans rather than imported trinkets, and prices are fixed rather than negotiated, paid mostly in cash since many vendors do not carry card machines. There is no tax-refund process, as this is an outdoor food and craft fair rather than a retail export business. The square gets dense with visitors from midday into the evening on both Saturday and Sunday, with communal tables set up in the center of the plaza for eating; the calmer handicraft stalls tend to sit along the plaza's edges, while the food stalls cluster more tightly toward the middle. The market sits directly above Liberdade metro station in central São Paulo, Brazil, and is usually combined with a visit to the neighborhood's Japanese-Brazilian cultural museum and shops along Rua Galvão Bueno.
