Edifício Copan

Edifício Copan, designed by Oscar Niemeyer and completed in 1966, is a 38-story serpentine apartment tower in the República district of central São Paulo, one of the largest residential buildings in Latin America. The building's sinuous brise-soleil facade curves are best captured from street level looking up along Avenida Ipiranga or from the adjacent Praça das Bandeiras, where the S-curve reads clearly against the sky. Morning side light, before roughly 10am, rakes across the concrete sun-shades and separates each curved floor plate with shadow; by midday the sun sits too high and flattens the facade's relief. The building faces west-northwest, so late afternoon can also work for a warmer, more golden tone on the concrete, though traffic and pedestrian density on Ipiranga increase through the day. Clear skies year-round work for this shot since the subject is architectural rather than landscape-dependent, though the dry season (April-September) offers less haze for a crisp skyline behind the curve. Downtown São Paulo's República area is busy on weekdays with office workers and vendors; a tripod on the narrow sidewalk of Ipiranga can obstruct pedestrian flow, so a monopod or handheld approach is more practical, and photography from the public street requires no permit or fee. Drones are prohibited in this dense, restricted downtown airspace near several government and commercial buildings.
