Museu da Língua Portuguesa

Museu da Língua Portuguesa opened in 2006 inside the upper floors of Estação da Luz, the historic 1901 railway station in the Luz district, as the world's first museum dedicated entirely to the Portuguese language. Its exhibits are built around large-scale interactive installations rather than static objects: touchscreen displays, projected word maps, and audio stations trace the language's roots from Latin through its evolution in Portugal and its spread across Brazil, Africa, and Asia, including regional dialects, slang, and literary references. A large central hall uses suspended screens and soundscapes to immerse visitors in spoken and sung Portuguese, from popular music to poetry by writers such as Carlos Drummond de Andrade. The museum suffered a major fire in December 2015, caused by an electrical fault during a temporary exhibition, which destroyed much of the original installation and killed one firefighter; the building was closed for a lengthy restoration and reopened its main galleries in 2020-2021 with rebuilt, updated exhibits. Because the museum occupies a historic train station still in active use below, its galleries sit directly above working CPTM and Metro platforms, tying the language museum physically to the immigration history the station itself represents.
