Ilhabela — Atlantic Forest Island Archipelago

Ilhabela lies about 200km east of São Paulo city, off the coast near São Sebastião in São Paulo State. The journey combines an intercity bus from Tietê Bus Terminal to São Sebastião (approximately R$70-90 round trip, around 3.5 hours) with a short free car-and-passenger ferry crossing the channel separating the mainland from the island, bringing total travel time to around 4 hours. Most of the island is covered by Parque Estadual de Ilhabela, protected Atlantic Forest with waterfalls such as Cachoeira da Toca and Cachoeira do Gato reachable by short forest trails from the island's main road. Vila do Ilhabela, the historic town near the ferry dock, has colonial-era buildings, seafood restaurants, and the departure point for schooner tours around the archipelago's more than 40 smaller islands. A typical day begins with an early ferry crossing to avoid weekend queues, followed by a morning hike to one of the accessible waterfalls or a walk through Vila do Ilhabela's historic core. Afternoons suit a boat trip to calmer beaches on the island's southern coast, such as Praia do Bonete, which is reachable only by trail or boat, or simply relaxing at Praia do Curral, which has beachfront kiosks. Grilled fish and shrimp moqueca are widely available at waterfront restaurants near the ferry terminal. April through September brings calmer seas and thinner crowds, useful for hiking and boat trips, while December through February suits warm-water swimming despite larger holiday crowds and notorious borrachudo biting flies, for which repellent is essential.
