Alto da Serra and Cubatão — Caminho do Mar

The Caminho do Mar corridor at Alto da Serra and Cubatão sits about 60km south of São Paulo city on the Serra do Mar escarpment, reached by the historic tourist train (Estrada de Ferro Santos-Jundiaí) departing from Paranapiacaba, or by car via the old Anchieta highway service road, with either route taking around 1.5 hours from the city. The site preserves sections of the original 19th-century mule trail and rail incline that connected the São Paulo plateau to the port of Santos, running through Atlantic Forest with viewpoints over the industrial Cubatão valley and the coast beyond. Reserva Florestal do Alto da Serra de Cubatão protects the surrounding forest, with trails that mix historic stonework from the old Caminho do Mar with steep, sometimes slippery descents down the escarpment face. A full day on this route typically starts early, since the train from Paranapiacaba runs on a limited seasonal schedule, followed by several hours of hiking along the old trail sections and its lookout points before returning by the same train or a pre-arranged car pickup. There are no restaurants along the trail itself, so visitors carry water and food for the full outing, with kiosks near the Paranapiacaba train station being the last reliable food stop. April through September gives the clearest views over the valley and coast, since drier air reduces the escarpment's characteristic mist; the terrain's steep grades and long duration make this one of the more physically demanding day trips from the city.
