Rio de Janeiro Weather & Climate Guide 2025
Plan your trip with detailed weather information and seasonal tips for Rio de Janeiro.
Rio de Janeiro is Brazil's most iconic state, home to the legendary city of Rio with its stunning beaches, dramatic mountains, and vibrant culture. The state blends natural wonders like Tijuca National Forest and Guanabara Bay with UNESCO-recognized landscapes and world-famous landmarks like Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf Mountain.
Best Time to Visit
Best Months
April to June and September to October
Warm sunny days (24-28°C), fewer crowds than summer, lower prices, less humidity and rain than the summer months. April-June is shoulder season with excellent beach weather and manageable tourist volumes.
Months to Avoid
January to February for tropical rainstorms and extreme humidity (though Carnival in February/March is unmissable)
January and February bring the wettest and hottest weather with afternoon storms, higher risk of flooding in low-lying areas, and the most crowded and expensive conditions (except for those attending Carnival)
Climate Overview
Rio de Janeiro has a tropical savanna climate (Aw) with warm, humid summers and mild, drier winters. Temperatures remain warm year-round (18-40°C), with a distinct wet season from November to March and a drier, slightly cooler season from June to September. The city's dramatic topography creates microclimates — Zona Sul beaches are sunnier while northern hillside neighborhoods receive more rain.
