Bargaining Tips
How to negotiate prices in local markets.
Bargaining is NOT standard in Rio malls or fixed stores — prices are fixed
At street markets (Feira Hippie, Feira de São Cristóvão), polite bargaining is acceptable — especially for buying multiple items
Start by asking 'Tem desconto?' (Is there a discount?) rather than stating a lower price
Craft vendors at tourist markets expect 10-20% negotiation; street vendors near beaches less so
When NOT to Bargain
- Fixed-price shops and malls
- Government emporiums
- Restaurants and hotels
- Supermarkets and pharmacies

What you need to know about taking purchases home.

Duty-Free Limits
Standard Brazilian customs allowance: US$500 purchased duty-free at international airports. Alcohol: 12 liters; tobacco: 25 cigarettes or similar.
