Oddballs' Camp

Oddballs' Camp occupies a clearing on the western edge of Chief's Island in the Moremi Game Reserve, deep inside the Okavango Delta. The camp is accessible only by light aircraft from Maun, a 25-minute flight that deposits guests on a grass airstrip ringed by leadwood and jackalberry trees. Chief's Island is the largest land mass in the delta and concentrates year-round game, making Oddballs a genuinely immersive wildlife destination rather than simply a scenic retreat.

Accommodation consists of dome tents on raised wooden decks, each with a private en suite bathroom — bucket showers fed by solar-heated water, flush toilets, and twin or double beds under mosquito nets. The setup is deliberately simple: no televisions, no room safes, no resort trappings. The camp generates its own power and water on-site using solar panels and a generator that runs for limited hours in the evening. A small bar and communal dining area form the social centre of camp, and bush dinners are served under the stars when conditions allow.

The primary activities are guided mokoro trips along the delta channels — poled through lily-padded waterways by local guides who identify birds, tracks, and plants with precision — and guided walking safaris in the surrounding mopane woodland. Because Chief's Island falls within Moremi Game Reserve, lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo are regularly encountered on foot. Game drive vehicles are available as an additional option. The ratio of guides to guests keeps all activities small and personal.

Rates are fully inclusive of all meals, activities, and airstrip transfers within the delta. The camp operates from April to November and closes during the Green Season. It is operated by Desert & Delta Safaris.
