Climate Overview

Bosnia and Herzegovina has a continental climate in most of the country, with cold snowy winters and hot summers, but Herzegovina (around Mostar) has a sub-Mediterranean microclimate with mild winters and very hot, dry summers. Sarajevo, set in a mountain-ringed valley at 537m elevation, experiences more extreme temperature swings than coastal regions. Snow falls October to April in mountain areas, making BiH one of Europe's best-value ski destinations. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons for travel.

Detailed information for each season.

🌸 Spring

Mar-May

Temperatures warm from 8°C to 18°C. Mountain wildflowers bloom May-June. Some rain and occasional late snow above 1,000m. Rivers run high and fast — excellent for white-water rafting.

Tips: Pack layers and a light rain jacket. Perfect for hiking and outdoor activities. Book accommodation for Eid holidays when Bosnians travel internally.

☀️ Summer

Jun-Aug

Hot in Herzegovina (35-40°C in Mostar) and warm in Sarajevo (26-30°C). Peak tourist season. August brings Sarajevo Film Festival. Mountain areas remain cooler at altitude.

Tips: Bring high-SPF sunscreen, especially for Herzegovina. Stay hydrated and plan outdoor activities for early morning. Book accommodation well in advance for August.

🍂 Fall

Sep-Nov

September and October are arguably the best months — warm days (18-24°C), autumn foliage turning the Dinaric forests gold and red, fewer tourists, and lower prices. November gets cold and rainy.

Tips: Ideal hiking and driving conditions. Herzegovina wine harvest in late September. Pack a warm layer for evenings from October.

❄️ Winter

Dec-Feb

Cold in Sarajevo (-5°C to 5°C) with heavy snowfall on the surrounding mountains. Bjelašnica and Jahorina ski resorts open December-March. Herzegovina milder (5-12°C). Christmas markets in Sarajevo city center.
