The Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of the two entities of Bosnia and Herzegovina and covers roughly half of the country, including the capital Sarajevo, Mostar, Jajce, Travnik, Konjic, Bihać and Neum on the Adriatic. Ottoman bazaars and Austro-Hungarian boulevards sit beside Herzegovinian stone villages, emerald rivers and the Bjelašnica and Prenj mountains. Prices are low by European standards, the Convertible Mark (BAM) is pegged to the euro, and Sarajevo and Mostar are connected by a scenic road and a daily train.
Medieval Bosnia was ruled by bans and kings until the Ottoman conquest in 1463-82, which shaped Sarajevo's bazaar, Mostar's bridge and the mosques of Herzegovina. Austria-Hungary occupied the country from 1878 and annexed it in 1908; the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo in 1914 helped trigger World War I. After Yugoslav federation, the 1992-95 war included the 1,425-day siege of Sarajevo. The Dayton Agreement of 1995 created the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republika Srpska.
